At times you could see his marathon mercy at work as he patiently dealt with his position seeking disciples. At other times he sprinted as he did the day he vehemently overturned money tables in the temple and angrily rebuked them for turning the house of God into a den of thieves. But all in all, his life was like a hundred yard dash. For the events surrounding his betrayal, his capture, and his crucifixion moved with such loving and sacrificial acceleration.

The most crucial moment of the race began in Gethsemane. He struggled for the courage to suffer. His health broke and the blood capillaries burst beneath his skin because he prayed so hard. Even as the race for your soul began he stood at the starting block dehydrated and already near the point of terminal exhaustion. But he endured. He pushed onward. The kiss of Judas, his most talented disciple, sounded the gun so to speak. And from that moment things went wild.

He was hurriedly taken to the Judgment hall of Pilate. He was falsely accused. He was scourged so brutally that his back looked like something you would see at a butcher’s shop. And before the race was even finished, before a winner was declared, the Roman persecutors violently placed a crown of thorns on his head, mocking him as King of the Jews.

Then came the cross. For six hours he suffered the most excruciating type of execution. Yet, what is six hours compared to eternal life? What span of time can those few short hours do to match the endless splendors to be enjoyed in a real heaven? 360 minutes of crucifixion to fix centuries of sin, both past and future. One fourth of a day to extinguish the innumerable nightmares of terror and torment experienced by countless men and women.

Yes, those six hours were merely a sprint of love; dashing grace; racing mercy that blurred through the halls of hell and set at liberty every man that would ever come to the cross; that would spring a river of the Holy Ghost from the belly of every man who truly believed.

So, you wonder, is it too late for you? Is forgiveness too forgone? Is hope fainted in a marathon of mistakes and pride? No. And ten thousand times no! Pray now. Seek the Lord now! For grace will race to you. Grace will find you in your storm, like John Newton, and deliver you. You can change through the power of repentance. You can have your sins washed away. You can be filled with the Spirit of God and live a better life.
